Summer Staples

My StyleValerie Comment

My summer wardrobe staples = t-shirts, skirts, sandals, hats. Such a simple, uncomplicated way to dress. This Gap t-shirt is from a local Goodwill and the skirt came from Goodwill in Florida. We went to Destin to spend time with my parents last February and I found this skirt. I was instantly attracted to the pretty fabric and when I felt it and saw the tag, I knew it was good quality. I didn't recognize the brand, which is Bulle de Savon, so I asked Google. Bulle de Savon is a Japanese brand and the photos that I have seen of the clothes are feminine, soft, and peaceful. This skirt is dreamy. And it is a wrap around, no less. I have loved wrap around skirts ever since I was a little girl. My older sister Karlene had a wrap around skirt and I was so happy when she outgrew it and it became mine. Youngest child = hand me downs.

A couple of weeks ago, I had the privilege of spending time with my friend Angela at her family cottage. We spent time in the beautiful area of Leelanau and had lovely conversation, shopped, and ate. And then talked some more, shopped some more, and ate some more. Oh, and went to the beach. I found this fabulous hat at an antique store. It is genuine palm leaf from the Texas Hat Company. This hat = the size of Texas.

A Twirly Dress

My StyleValerie 2 Comments

I found this dress at Salvation Army last winter. It looks to me like it is from the late 80s, maybe early 90s. I tried to Google the brand, but had no luck coming up with anything. The tag says Magic. And it is. Because it is TWIRLY!

Not only that, but it has an Audrey Hepburn feel. Any day you can pretend you are Audrey Hepburn, is a good day.

No, I do not think I am too old to twirl in a field of wildflowers.

70s

My StyleValerie Comment

Over the fourth of July, we traveled to Greenville, Illinois to spend some time with my husband's family and watch two of our kids perform with the Northern Lights Homeschool Marching Band in the St. Louis VP Parade. While we were in Greenville, I took my daughter Liza and my niece Sophie thrift shopping. Because you have to go thrift shopping when you are visiting another town. It's a rule. My rule. Greenville has a fabulous thrift store. We found treasures at great prices. I scored some 70s stuff. A macramé wall hanger for $1.00! Yeah, you read right...One. Dollar. Can you ever have too much macramé in a house? I'm gonna go ahead and answer that for you. The answer is no. No, you can't.

And then I found a Bob Marley t-shirt for $2.25. The t-shirt isn't actually from the 70s, but it feels like the 70s. And it's Bob Marley. And listening to Bob Marley is like sitting at the lake on a perfect summer day. And wearing a Bob Marley t-shirt is like sitting with Bob at the lake on a perfect summer day, while he sings to me. Only me. And he croons, "Don't worry about a thing." And I lean my head on his shoulder and say, "That's wise advice, Bob."

Finally, the créme de la créme...a vintage white sundress for $4.00! It is in excellent condition. Simply divine. I want to put on this dress and wear it while I walk through the woods. Or walk in a field.

Or walk on a beach in Brazil.

Or walk through the Italian countryside to my villa.

Marley and macramé. The perfect combination.

Summer

Life, My StyleValerie Comment

I have decided it is the summer of curls and braids.  And loose fitting clothes.  And lying on the beach, friends gathering in our back yard for a meal, relaxing on the pallet bed with a good book, gardening, watching Will and Liza march in parades with the homeschool band. A summer of transitions as Jack finalizes his plans for college this fall.  Oh eighteen years, where did you go?!  And I am praying for a summer of healing for Henry, that his new doctor will have some insight in bringing strength and endurance back to his body.

A summer of reflection.  I once heard Richard Foster introduce Dallas Willard with these words, "He is content to be known and get his identity from simply being a disciple of Jesus Christ."  I wrote it down because it was such a beautiful description.  And what my heart desires.  Wife, homeschooling mama, fitness trainer, free spirit, the chick that thrifts...may all of these flow out of my true identity, a follower of Jesus.

After a long, harsh winter this summer feels especially needed.  And it's a good reminder that long, harsh winters don't last forever.
